Where are you going, Daddy?

Posted Friday, November 9, 2012, at 9:25 AM

I wanted to do something in this space this week and next in honor of Veterans Day.

This week, I'd like to share lyrics to a song I wrote while on a mission trip to Russia several years back.

It was written as if from a young child's eyes as he watched his father board a plane heading off to not-so-friendly territories.

After singing it for several years, our nation entered into wars and thousands of citizen soldiers and enlisted men and women said goodbye to their families and headed into the unknown to fight for their nation.

I share this now to honor those who fight those battles, whether military or spiritual one; whether the soldier is on a mission for Christ or on a mission to protect his or her nation.

Where Are You Going Daddy?

Where are you going, Daddy?
What will I do ...
when I need a shoulder to cry on ...
when I turn two?

And that plane you're ridin' Daddy ...
where does it go?
Does it have a destination ...
Or do you really know?

Where are you going, Daddy?
Where will you be ...
when I need a hand to cling to ...
when I turn three?

That train you're ridin' Daddy ...
where does it lead?
Is the harvest ready now ...
or are you the seed?

And what about the people there ...
do they need you, too?
And when it's time to come back home ...
will they miss you like I do?

You'd better be going, Daddy.
I promise I won't cry.
We have to be big boys now ...

Daddy, what's that in your eye?

Splendid Shep, I wish I had written it. :)

Thanks OKR ... Wrote it way back in 1993 on an old train barrelling across Russia/Ukraine on my way to Crimea to do some work with local pastors there.
