The Dark Lands

Like many of you, I have known loved ones, relatives, acquaintances, and friends who have been -- and may still be -- affected by darkness others cannot see ... those who are troubled with Alzheimer's disease, some form of dementia, or maybe severe cases of seasonal depression.

The poem below comes from those times when I have been privileged to visit with, counsel with, or just sit with some of these folks. I hope you do not find it offensive in any way.

The Shepherd's Heart

The Dark Lands

Sometimes I walk the dark lands
Searching for my soul
Reaching out with trembling hands
Trying to gain control

Sometimes I walk the dark lands
Searching for my past
Finding bits and pieces strewn
Like rubble from some blast
Sometimes I walk the dark lands
Searching for a friend
Not knowing whom I might trust
To be there in the end

Sometimes I walk the dark lands
Knowing not my way
Yet yearning for tomorrow
At close of every day

Sometimes I walk the dark lands
With storm clouds above
Daring not to chase the sun
Or try to capture love

Sometimes I walk the dark lands
Lonely and confused
Or acting not quite my age
I hope you are amused

Sometimes I walk the dark lands
Quiet and unknown
If you see me in the dark lands
Don't leave me there alone
