Veteran Jay Lyle still puts on an impressive show

I know I have been quiet the last few months, but family problems seem to do that. So I thought I would fill you in on the status of a racing veteran, who raced at Sportsman's Speedway in its booming days. Jay Lyle of Warrensburg began racing a super-modified in the 60s and since then has driven street stocks, late models, sprints, modifieds and other cars on dirt tracks around the state. The past few years he has settled into a street stock and runs the J66 at L A Raceway on Friday nights and Central Missouri Speedway on Saturday nights. Lyle has been manning the wheels of racing machines for over 40 years and makes racing around a dirt track look like a "cake walk." Last Friday night he showed the "young guns" the way around the track in his heat race. He sailed through the turns like he had wings and walked away from the pack down the straight aways -- never hiccupping or even, slightly hesitating. He took the heat race by storm and showed his experience in the feature event. Lyle battled for the lead with Troy Reasoner of Urich (No. 25JR) at L A Raceway Friday, May 23. Reasoner and Jay swapped leads around each corner until Lyle headed for the pits with just three laps left in the feature event. Lyle routinely runs at the front of the pack with all the younger drivers attempting to remove him from his throne as the leader. Jay's son, Chad, has the same makings and easygoing attitude driving a car around the track and it shows as he charges to the front in his division racing his No. 96 modified. If Lyle gets his car in running order, the "young-guns" at L A Raceway will definitely have their hands full. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

good stuff!
nobody really cares about this stuff, but at least it is better than the OBTW and the Chords & Lyrics blogs.
what do you mean nobody cares about this stuff, we have had a lot of race car drivers & crews who put out 20,30 or more years racing around our local race tracks such as saline county sportsman speedway which would still be here if it was a fancy golf course [which too much money is spent on in our town over a lot of years [that is not worth it] instead of a race track and what a shame to let something that had so much history and connection with the town, county & state and was a major sunday night draw to our town or what is left of our so called town, sedalia's state fair speedway, warrensburg, holt's summit at jeff city,I-70 speedway, moberly, etc. with hardly any support at all from local newspaper papers or radio stations to help keep them going or give a pat on the back to the local drivers and crews for putting on a good show !!!! so as we say a lot of people not intrested and as far as history, this town lost out, and spends way to much money on things that no one is intrested in at all, from our schools, events, activities,we need a new group of people with new names to step in with new ideas and run the whole show, and get rid of the same old same old ideas by same old people and family members from generation to generations !!!!
I read this paper every day on line and I do enjoy what you write about the old race car drivers that raced at sportsman speedway. My husband was one of them. I thought that you were going to continue your column of the old drivers but then you stop. I think that you need to continue doing a story on one every week and I know that it is hard to find anything out about the driver but I do think that it is very good for people that went to races there in Marshall to read about these drivers.
thank you for listening to me
