Grimes starts season strong

Though I love all types of racing, whether it is dirt or pavement, I am mostly partial to sprint car racing. I am still trying to figure out what makes them so appealing to me. I don't know if it is their speeds, styles or maybe the history. As most of you know by now, sprint car racing has been in my family for years. It began when they called them "super-modifieds." Was it the stories growing up that made me like them the most? Who knows, I know I don't. But I am a little off track. I went to a Winged Outlaw Warrior race on Saturday at L A Raceway. Fans came pouring in by vehicle loads and the stands filled up quickly, so I know I am not the only one with such passion for this type of racing. A lot of the well-known (well, to me anyways) drivers were there, like Jesse "The Rocket" Hockett; Randy Martin, three time consecutive WOW point champion; Bryan Grimes, Slater's own WOW champ; "Blackjack" Brian Brown; Josh Fisher, 2007 national 360 rookie of the year and local driver from Smithton; David and Frank Brown from right here in Marshall; and a few others. The Rocket took the event win. Brown and Martin showed other cars in the field why they have numerous wins under their belts as they battled for the second position. But the surprise to me was Grimes. Last year, Grimes had lots of problems with the mechanics of his car. At this particular race at L A Raceway in 2007, Grimes blew the motor in his car and was unable to compete. This year he started out a little shaky too, as spectators saw Grimes' car smoking during hot laps. Grimes told me after the race that the car was a little full on oil and that is what caused the smoking. He came out in his heat race and took it by storm. In the main feature, Grimes started out in a good position and did even better by the end of the race. He slipped by Jay Kinder, who was slowly slipping backwards, for fourth place, where he would remain until the finish of the race. Grimes found the hook-up on the track and sat comfortably in fourth. Though he probably would have liked to win, it just wasn't in the cards for the night. But I believe the young man has plenty of potential and there is a winner's circle with his name on it. His next stop will be Friday, April 18, at Midway Speedway in Lebanon. So if you have a little time and want to see some entertainment, I encourage you to go watch this young man take the wheel of a powerful 360 sprint. I believe you won't be disappointed. |
