Grimes starts season strong
Posted Monday, April 7, at 12:31 PM
Though I love all types of racing, whether it is dirt or pavement, I am mostly partial to sprint car racing.
I am still trying to figure out what makes them so appealing to me. I don't know if it is their speeds, styles or maybe the history. As most of you know by now, sprint car racing has been in my family for years. It began when they called them "super-modifieds." Was it the stories growing up that made me like them the most? Who knows, I know I don't. But I am a little off track. I went to a Winged Outlaw Warrior race on Saturday at L A Raceway. Fans came pouring in by vehicle loads and the stands filled up quickly, so I know I am not the only one with such passion for this type of racing. A lot of the well-known (well, to me anyways) drivers were there, like Jesse "The Rocket" Hockett; Randy Martin, three time consecutive WOW point champion; Bryan Grimes, Slater's own WOW champ; "Blackjack" Brian Brown; Josh Fisher, 2007 national 360 rookie of the year and local driver from Smithton; David and Frank Brown from right here in Marshall; and a few others. The Rocket took the event win. Brown and Martin showed other cars in the field why they have numerous wins under their belts as they battled for the second position. But the surprise to me was Grimes. Last year, Grimes had lots of problems with the mechanics of his car. At this particular race at L A Raceway in 2007, Grimes blew the motor in his car and was unable to compete. This year he started out a little shaky too, as spectators saw Grimes' car smoking during hot laps. Grimes told me after the race that the car was a little full on oil and that is what caused the smoking. He came out in his heat race and took it by storm. In the main feature, Grimes started out in a good position and did even better by the end of the race. He slipped by Jay Kinder, who was slowly slipping backwards, for fourth place, where he would remain until the finish of the race. Grimes found the hook-up on the track and sat comfortably in fourth. Though he probably would have liked to win, it just wasn't in the cards for the night. But I believe the young man has plenty of potential and there is a winner's circle with his name on it. His next stop will be Friday, April 18, at Midway Speedway in Lebanon. So if you have a little time and want to see some entertainment, I encourage you to go watch this young man take the wheel of a powerful 360 sprint. I believe you won't be disappointed.
Amazing Horse Facts Larry Askins always has amazing facts at the Marshall Rotary Club's weekly meetings on Thursdays. So after browsing around on the Internet, I thought I would do my own version of amazing facts. And these are about horses! On the Net:...
When does racing season start? I don't know about anyone else, but this crazy weather makes me want racing season to be here that much faster. As temperatures drop and the snow flies, nothing makes me want to hit the track more. I am champing at the bit to feel warm temperatures accompanied with dirt flying fun and weekly racing series...
The last truly wild horse in the world Did you know that there is only one known horse that has never been domesticated in the world? A Przewalski horse is the only remaining, truly wild horse in the world. Some might say, "Well what about the American Mustangs and the Australian Brumbies?"...
Is winning everything? Dale Earnhardt once said, "The winner ain't the one with the fastest car, it's the one who refuses to lose." According to some of the drivers I have interviewed in the past, they learned that finishing the race is better than tearing up the car trying to win...
Darn the bad luck Some race car drivers have the darnedest luck. When talking with Rick Darling of Rick Darling's Performance Heads and Engines about his various adventures behind the wheel of a race car at Sportsman's Speedway in Marshall, he noted that he lucked out on points trophies several years in a row. And he never collected one from the track...
Driver Call Out It has been brought to my attention that my racing series, which I have been working hard on for the paper, has been called out. Here is an ANONYMOUS note I received with no name or number to find out more information. "Okay --- we've seen all the sprint car drivers in the area, how about some of our Stock Car Drivers.. there's several dirt late model drivers in the area. If you are going to do a complete article you must include them also."...
The Rustic West Everyone has an idol correct? Well my favorite person that I wished I would have gotten to meet is John Wayne. I grew up watching several John Wayne movies as a kid. Some of my favorites are Rio Lobo, Rio Bravo, El Dorado, Hatari!, Hellfighters, Chisum and many, many more...
You can tell a person by their horse So, let's talk horses! There are many breeds of horses to choose from, but have you ever considered you can tell a person by their horse. If someone rides a smaller horse with more defined, muscular hindquarters, they are interested in reining and cutting. This horse is very agile and quick on their feet with great propulsion from the hindquarters...
Best of Friends Well I had an adventure that I will never forget. Have you ever sat in a room with two old time race car drivers who were best friends growing up but "all is free game" on the track? David Gauldin and A.J. Utlaut are two of a kind. They grew up fishing and hunting together. I even got to see a picture of the two of them with David's brother, Charlie, holding a poll that had five large Spoonbill...
