Health insurance

This won't be a long posting, but I had an interesting experience this weekend I wanted to share.
Long story short, I had knee surgery last Thursday. Part of the treatment is to use a Continuous Passive Motion machine three times a day for two hours at a time. The CPM treatment is intended to keep my knee flexible during the six weeks it's in a leg brac.
I asked the technician how long I needed to use the CPM - that is, how many days or weeks I'd need it. He said, "Well, that depends on your insurance company." This is my first experience with medical-care-by-insurance-carrier. While I understand the carrier wants to keep costs down, I think my doctor is a better judge of this particular treatment - or, in fact, any treatment I receive.
