Greenhand conferences keep state officers busy

Posted Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at 10:58 AM

It's a busy time of the year for the State Officers! Over the past month, our team has presented 19 conferences, been on countless chapter visits, traveled thousands of miles between us, and have started preparing for our biggest event of the year...State FFA Convention! Just a little over two months to go! But a new year brings new activities. Let's go back to the beginning of 2012!

The new year got off to a great start with Greenhand Motivation Conferences. This is a conference for first year members, to show them all the opportunities they have in FFA. Getting to present greenhand conferences this year was a very special moment for me. When I was a freshman at my greenhand conference, I set a goal to become a state officer. Four years later, I was given the opportunity to motivate and inspire FFA members, just like the state officers had inspired me. Three groups of state officers traveled all across Missouri presenting skits, workshops, and keynote addresses to thousands of greenhands. The group I was in traveled to southeast Missouri. Being from central Missouri, this was not an area I had been in much. It was so neat to see how different things were in another part of the state. I definitely was not used to all the trees and steep hills in that part of the state, and needless to say, when the week was over, I was happy to see a beautiful, flat cornfield.

The 2012 Greenhand Conference theme was "Dancing with the FFA Stars." Our conferences included a lot of dancing, even more fun, and tons of leadership! Through our skits and workshops, we stressed to the members how important it was to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. When we push ourselves to place we think we are not capable of going, that is when we are the most successful! In my keynote address, I spoke about how important it was to never give up, even if someone doesn't believe in you. What is most important is that we always believe in ourselves and know that there is no limit to what we are capable of!

The FFA members we met that week were amazing. They were so excited to learn about FFA and I am looking forward to seeing what things they do in our organization in the next few years. They are the future of agriculture and the future definitely looks bright! After traveling from Jefferson City, to Waynesville, West Plains, Poplar Bluff, Cape Girardeau, Sullivan, and back to Jefferson City, all in three days, we were all exhausted. But each of us had experienced one of the best weeks of our lives. Each one of us feels so blessed to be able to do what we do, and we hope that each member left Greenhand Motivational Conferences inspired and ready to see what amazing things they can do in the National FFA Organization.

In the next few weeks, the state officers will be traveling to Jefferson City for FFA Legislative Day as part of National FFA Week and Career and Technical Education Month. We will have the opportunity to meet with our respective senator and representative, and our State FFA President will get to speak on the house floor. We will be completing more chapter visits, and at the end of the month we will have our final executive meeting where we will be completing our State FFA Convention planning! We have an awesome convention in store for everyone!

This is definitely a good way for people to keep up with the Missouri State FFA officers! I know the FFA gave me many great opportunities while in high school and I still have many connections that have carried on while currently in college. Good luck on your future travels!
