Are You One of the "Village People"??Posted Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 9:55 PM
You have heard the phrase "it takes a village" when it comes to raising children. I am here to tell you that it takes a village to operate an Animal Shelter! We here in Marshall are incredibly fortunate to have a whole village full of folks who help in a myriad of ways to give the best care possible to the animals who pass through our doors. There are of course the paid Animal Shelter staff, which include one full time staff and one ¾ time staff. There are two full time Animal Control Officers who not only deal with a wide variety of animal issues in the City but also help cover the essential duties at the Shelter when needed. As part of the Marshall Police Department, we receive support and assistance from that agency and the City of Marshall. We have essential support from the Saline Animal League, who coordinates and does all the transporting as well as funding all of our medical needs, as well as taking a van full of animals to different PetSmart stores in the Kansas City area every Saturday for adoptions. And we can't forget the Marshall veterinarians who are so critical to the provision of appropriate and necessary medical care for our animals. We are able to offer work opportunities to people in many different situations who need to log in community service hours for the court system, Division of Youth Services, Public Housing Authority and Division of Family Services. We work with Missouri Valley College and Marshall High School to provide work study opportunities. There are many, many individuals and organizations who ask about our needs and freely give supplies that help keep the Shelter clean , food that fills bellies, and sometimes special gifts that help us be more efficient, like recent gifts of a computer and printer/copier/scanner/fax machine. Last but certainly not least, we have people who give of their time to walk dogs and play with cats, enabling those animals to be friendly and sociable when potential adopters come to visit. And I bet there are a whole lot more folks that I have forgotten to mention. It really does take a village!
Here's a great big THANK YOU to all those villagers out there! You are making a difference!
ALERT!! The Shelter is reaching critical capacity in the Dog Room. If you have been considering adding a dog to your family, NOW would be the time to come and meet some potential candidates. We have a wide variety of dogs at this time, including several black Lab mixes, a Rottweiler, shepherd mixes, chihuahuas, a cocker spaniel, yorkie/terrier mix, and more!
