Lost ... and found

Have you ever lost a pet? It can be a pretty devastating experience. Each year the Marshall Animal Shelter takes in literally HUNDREDS of pets whose owners are unknown, and the animals eventually become the property of the City of Marshall. Some owners do search for and reclaim their pets, it's true; but the vast majority are never reclaimed by their original owners.

On Tuesday evening, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. you will have the unique opportunity to learn about how to keep your pet safe and sound. The Shelter has been graciously invited to share information at the Marshall Public Library, and we are happy to oblige! Come visit with us about pets in Marshall, ordinances designed to keep your pet safe, and ways to find your lost pet.

And who knows, you may get the chance to meet some of our furry friends who are looking for good homes. This program is open to anyone interested in attending. For more information you may call the shelter at 660-831-0420 or the library at 660-886-3391. Hope to see you there!

Thanks for the great question about microchips. We do have a microchip reader and do use it on animals when they first come into the shelter. I'm told that there is a new kind of microchip called an international chip, which is apparently required for pets traveling overseas. Our microchip reader will not recognize these chips, so this is something that we will need to work on upgrading. I believe all our Marshall vet offices have microchip readers and at least one has the ability to recognize the international chips.

And regarding the beautiful gray cat pictured on the right of our blog...her name is Lairah and she is available for adoption. We can also report happy news from the owner of the gray cat advertised as lost in the newspaper--he was found this morning!

And- That big grey cat in the picture of the first article looks a lot like the picture of a lost big grey cat in the newspaper....... Just saying'

When I adopted my pup from the animal shelter (a few years ago) I asked them if I should get him microchipped (he's a "runner") they said not to bother because no one in town had the readers. Of course that was a few years ago.

great point owls, in addition to tags, microchipping is the best way to make sure your animal comes back home if it gets lost.

i hope that's the first thing the shelter does when it finds an animal loose is to check for the microchip. if it doesn't have a reader or a good up to date reader it needs to get one asap.
