My new favorite app

Posted Sunday, August 22, 2010, at 4:57 PM

I commute to Warrensburg twice a week for graduate school. The stereo in my truck is fried and since I have this handy smart phone that does pretty much everything else, I started looking for a music app.

I found Pandora Radio.

It's a free app, although it does serve up ads. The ads don't bother me -- when they appear on my screen, I'm usually watching the road.

Pandora allows the listener to enter an example of the band or song they like and then builds a play list around that selection.

For example, I currently have four channels on my Pandora: Eagles, Flogging Molly, Jimmy Buffett and Indigo Girls. It provides commercial free music that fits exactly the mood or style of music I want -- when I want it.

Of course, if you sign up for the free Pandora account, you need to make sure you have unlimited broadband -- it will quickly swamp limited use accounts.

Heh. I started a Mighty Mighty Bosstones channel a few weeks ago & tonight up pops... Flogging Molly.

I'm going to try a Bach channel next and see how long it takes...

@Eric: I tend to get more Celtic music through my Flogging Molly channel. But I think that has to do with the like/dislike engine.

@Slater: I'm looking for a suitable vehicle for a full size gassifier. I have a copy of the FEMA plans so I can't imagine it would be very difficult from here out -- famous last words.

I like Pandora, too. I tune it in on my computer every now and then.

How's the wood burner project coming along?

I'm a Pandora fan, too. Here's a question, though: On my Gogol Bordello channel I get lots of Flogging Molly songs. Do you get any Gogol Bordello on your Flogging Molly channel? Just curious about how reciprocal the selection system is.
