So Long, Farewell

Posted Monday, May 17, 2010, at 10:33 AM

Auf wiedersehen, goodbye. And so the song goes. The song from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music" that I used to torture my uncle with, by singing it over and over. And now, in all sincerity, it is time for me to say those words to you, loyal readers.

I have enjoyed my year and a half at The Marshall Democrat-News, and I have learned a lot -- not just about journalism, but also about myself and small towns and more. Now, however, it is time for me to move on. I have accepted a position teaching English with the Chatteris Educational Foundation in Hong Kong, and I am very excited to set off on another adventure and explore the world.

I would like to thank everyone for reading my blog and paying attention to my thoughts and opinions. I must also thank all my sources and journalistic subjects, who, for the most part, have been wonderfully cooperative in our working relations. I wish every Saline Countian only the very best for the future.

Perhaps I will return to Marshall someday, but for now I bid you adieu. From time to time, I may add new entries to this blog, describing my international experiences. But, you can also follow my foreign journey on a new as-yet unnamed blog, which will be linked to my current one: http://sydneysjoyofeating.blogspot.com.

You and your music will be missed by all of us. Remember that the world does not need anymore of most things but the world is always in need of more music. I have always enjoyed your playing in the Philharmonic and Muni Band. Special Thanks for your playing at the chamber music performance. Keep playing your music!

Thank you for your fresh approach on reporting at the MDN. We readers really enjoyed your perspective. We wish you the best and look forward to future blogs in the Democrat News.

Your musical and writing talents will be missed. It will be exciting to read about your new adventures. I just learned of your joy of eating blog. You will have some exciting new food choices to share with your readers.

When I traveled to Hong Kong in the early 90s I was amazed to see sky scrapers under construction with the scaffolding made of bamboo surrounding the structure. I will be interested to learn if construction has changed. Bon voyage.

Something about music. Something about small towns. Something about Hong Kong. Or maybe something else entirely.

Sydney is a former staff writer for the Democrat-News. She received degrees from University of Missouri in both music and magazine journalism. She played oboe with the Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra and the Marshall Municipal Band while she was in Marshall.
