Grandmothers & Clothes

News reports earlier this week revealed the RNC has spent over $150,000.00 on clothing for Gov. Palin. According to financial disclosure records some of expenditures include: $49,425.74 at Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York; $75,062.63 at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis;$4,716.49 on hair and makeup.

Spokeswoman Maria Comella said: "The campaign does not comment on strategic decisions regarding how financial resources available to the campaign are spent." Today Sen. McCain defended the Republican National Committee's decision saying "She needed clothes at the time." The clothes are to be donated to charity after the election, but using campaign funds for such expenses was something Sen. McCain specifically denounced and tried to stop several years ago in the Senate. The odd thing is this amount of money could have increased TV ads for McCain/Palin by 33% in Indiana and was more than weekly ads in six states. I did like some of the clothes: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/23...

Does anyone remember all the 'controversy/outrage' over a $400 haircut earlier in the primary season?

It was reported earlier this week that Sen. Obama would be traveling to Hawaii to visit his ailing grandmother. This is the women that played a major role in raising him. It has been reported that his 85-year-old grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, recently was discharged from the hospital after suffering a fractured hip and her health is declining. Is this not the behavior of someone with his priorities in order? It speaks volumes about his 'family values' and is the same reaction most of us would have if there was a similar medical situation in our immediate family. The only difference being we are not a presidential candidate with only 12 days left until the election. When I read some of the posts on the Fox News blog, I could not believe what some of the people were saying. The second guessing and some of the statements were very alarming. I realized it was only a blog and there are some that want to vent hate so I simply ignored it. But today, when Republican strategist Brad Blakeman was asked about Gov. Palin's clothes expense, he had the audacity to say the real outrage is Barack Obama "taking a 767 campaign plane to go visit Grandma. Forget about the energy that is wasted, what about the hundreds of thousands of dollars to take a private trip when this guy should be humping his bags on a commercial plane or taking a smaller plane. Taking a 767 of campaign money from people who could least afford it is more of an outrage in my opinion."

I will pass on the robocalls, the 'Muslim socialist' charge, the 'people will look back at this moment in economic history and say tax cuts work' for now. The first two stories deserve to stand alone. I will let you judge the content.

It blows me away to see some individuals judging Senator Obama for going to visit his ill grandmother. I also understand the issues with the 757, but what about the reported $21,012 Governor Palin spent in tax dollars for her children to hop on a plain and travel with her according to http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27310849/. How about the report that Palin re-worded tax forms in order to claim her children performed state business on these trips? Hmmm….

It's funny that Brad Blakeman had nothing to say about the clothing expenses of Governor Palin's clothing expenses, but had a mouth full of insults when it came to Obama. I just have one question for all of those "soccer mom's", how often do you spend over $4,000 for hair and makeup? I know what I spend on make-up and hair products amounts to maybe $20.00 a month. I splurge every 4 or 5 months and spend $20.00 on a haircut. I'm lucky if I can buy a tube of lipstick. I know politicians have to spend a little more than the average person because they are suppose to be representing themselves in such a huge limelight, but Ms. Palin is speaking out of both sides of her mouth. She wants to level with us and be like the average person but these expenses are out of my league. I know that I would much rather see Senator Obama fly on a 757 and pay a large sum of money to see his ill grandmother than to watch Senator Palin spend money on a new wardrobe and flights for her daughters.

If you want to hear negative comments about Obama, go to Fox News. If you want to find negative comments about McCain, go to MSNBC. If it's smear speach you seek, one only needs to look in the correct place to find it, and you found what you were looking for at Fox News.

The 757 Obama took to see his grandmother was for a good cause - it may be the last chance he has to see her and he certinly can't charter a commercial flight to go see her. Sarah Palin's clothing, make-up and hair costs everyday are unique to this election cycle. Seriously, if the three male nominees had the same suit and shirt on everyday and only changed their tie, nobody would notice. None of them have any hair to do or daily make-up. Nice, high-end business attire from an upscale shop in New York is EXPENSIVE, and if an occasion like as running for VP of the United States isn't worthy of such purchases, then please tell me what is!

Both sides of these particular attacks are irrelivant to our election and matter only to those searching to start static.

Did any of you libs look into how many designer outfits were "donated" to hillary? I'll be willing to bet her clothing , hair and makeup didnt catch you attention than. Your grasping at straws. At least the RNC paid for hers.

These expenses were listed in the McCain/Palin "campaign expense" reports. That was the same source where the media found out about $400 haircuts of Sen. Edwards & Sen. McCain's $500 shoes.

To try and connect clothing "expenses" to a direct criticism of visiting one's ill grandmother strikes me as disgusting and another sign of desperation. It is a reflection on the priorities of the McCain campaign when the highest paid staff member the first two weeks of Oct. was Amy Strozzi (Gov. Palin's makeup stylist). She was paid $22,800.00; this would translater into a salary of $547,000.00 a year.

This from a campaign that is emphasizing "Joe the Plumber" (a plumbers average salary is under $40,000/yr) and they are for the middle class. I agree this should not be a campaign issue but when Obama is criticized for visiting an ill relative and that is compared to a shopping spree at stores most Americans could/will never afford or patronize.... then it does become something worth discussing.

Fortunately, Michelle Obama took the high road and refused to jump on that bandwagon - can't say Cindy McCain or Sarah Palin would have had that much class...
