Campaign Season Beginning to Smell

Posted Thursday, September 11, 2008, at 7:09 PM

Campaign season is in full swing and it is interesting to see how some of the races are beginning to shape up. The past few days we have witnessed the news shows, candidates and surrogates talk about pigs, lipstick and sex-ed for kindergartners. Are these the topics, issues and dialogue we have to look forward to in the days ahead? The McCain campaign issued an ad implying that Sen. Obama was referring to Gov. Palin as a pig from remarks that had been made earlier in the day. There were calls for an apology to be issued immediately because of the insult to the governor. The web ad was removed from several sights because of the misleading nature of the piece. This ad, along with many of the campaign tactics being employed have been referred to as gutter politics and half-truths by more than two dozen writers, papers and others.

The full comment that has raised all this fuss was: "John McCain says he's about change, too -- except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics. That's just calling the same thing something different. You can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change; it's still going to stink after eight years." How would anyone think this statement was referring to Gov. Palin? For a matter of clarification, Senator McCain used the exact same term (pigs/lipstick) when discussing Hillary Clinton's health care plan at least four times in the past year. The most recent was in May 2008. Where were the cries of sexism, where was the outrage, where were the demands for a public apology?

I have heard no discussion on war, unemployment rising, education, health care, budget deficits, OPEC, military suicide rates or dozens of other issues that need discussing and answering.

Congressman Kenny Hulshof, A.G. Jay Nixon, Andrew Finkenstadt and Gregory Thompson just completed the first gubernatorial debate this afternoon. Each candidate recognized and acknowledged this solemn date and the impact it has had on our country. It appeared that Rep. Hulshof was focused on Jay Nixon more than on his specific plans for Missouri. According to the Springfield News a similar thing apparently happened earlier in the week when the Congressman stated the 'manufacturing environment in MO is good' (http://www.newsleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080910/NEWS01/809100489)

This was said despite recent statistics showing unemployment was 6.7% in July (highest in 17 years) and the fact that in the past year, Missouri has lost more jobs than all 8 bordering states. While talking about health care, Rep. Hulshof acknowledged that he has one full time employee to operate/manage the family farm and that person does not have any health insurance, yet he supported the Medicaid cuts while over 750,000 Missourians have no health care insurance.

On a local note: the Democratic County Headquarters had a hole shot through the window sometime during the night. The apparent target was a stained glass panel that was hanging in the window and the weapon of choice was probably a pellet or bb gun. Thankfully the stained glass was barely missed but the damage to the large pane glass window will now have to be repaired. Later in the day, as I walked out from the back/kitchen area of the building, I noticed an older gentleman at our 'registration' table. He left when I appeared and upon closer inspection, I found that some campaign buttons were taken. There was a sign clearly noting there was a charge and the amount involved was small but it caused me some bewilderment. In Springfield earlier this week, there was a TV report about large amount of campaign yard signs being stolen from several neighborhoods. It seems that the 'dirty tricks' and lack of respect can be found at all levels and it is a very sad commentary on our political process and how campaigns are conducted.

Is this what passes for a civil discourse? Is this what we want from our politicians and campaigns? Is this acceptable behavior? Is this how we want our children to learn about civic involvement? I find it hard to believe that 'we the people' don't expect more from our candidates, elected officials and neighbors. I know that we deserve better and that we should demand it and accepted nothing less than an open, honest debate that respects everyone.

On Sunday, I learned that Mayor Mike Swoboda had passed away. His memorial service was this afternoon. Mike was the Mayor of Kirkwood and died as a result from gunshot wounds suffered at a city council meeting on February 7th. Two council members and two police officers also lost their lives in that tragic event. Gov. Matt Blunt has ordered all flags in the state lowered to half-staff until Saturday in memory of Mayor Swoboda and the victims of 9/11. I had the honor and privilege to work closely with Mike when he was President of the MO Municipal League. Though we were of different political ideologies, he exemplified what it meant to be a good public servant. He encouraged me to run for VP of the MML after failed earlier attempts; he was always positive, he always supported me, he always had a smile and he was a complete joy to be around and to work with. He will be sadly missed.

I'm not going to try and throw insults or anything like that at you, Monnig, but I just have to ask:

When you talk about the lipsticked pig (which I agree is a stupid issue) and say "How would anyone think this statement was referring to Gov. Palin?" I wonder if you actually heard the audio on that?

See, I really want to move past this issue, but I don't want people think this was ENTIRELY made up by the McCain camp, which of course did blow it out of proportion.

Here's how it happened if you listen to it, Obama said "That's just calling the same thing something different. You can put lipstick on a pig;" at this point the crowd burst into laughter, then he finished "it's still a pig."

You wonder how someone might take that as a comment about Palin, but I ask you how someone (a crowd even) might find "you can put lipstick on a pig" as a hilarious comment, unless the crowd made a connection Obama hadn't probably intended. I don't find it funny no matter how comedic a mood I'm in. But if it's that funny I'll randomly say "you can put lipstick on a pig" to get a laugh.

But it is sick what some people will do even in Marshall, referring the BB shot through the window.

Ms. Palin is the one who initially made the reference to lipstick in her speech to the Republican convention, when she said "What's the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lipstick." And she is also the one who branded herself a "hockey mom." This is just one variation on a "joke" that's been going around for years and it's not particularly flattering to women, so on that basis alone, many women could take offense, and I'm sure some did.

Obama's reference is an entirely different one, to the even older line, "You can't put lipstick on a pig and call it beautiful - it's still a pig." And that, too, could be construed as offensive, although somewhat less than Palin's comment.

Wouldn't it be great if our politicians would just confine themselves to the real issues and stop this nonsense?????

McCain admitted today that the comment referenced had nothing to do with & was not about Gov. Palin. I still have not heard a response to Sen. McCain's using the same phrase referring to Sen. Clinton's health care plan. In regards to the reference to Oberman & late night TV; just an update, that show is on @ 7 & 9 pm as well as early morning. The reference to Ms. Maddow as a nephew.......I am assuming you are making reference to her being openly gay. Ha Ha Ha, how hilarious. FYI: she attended Oxford University, was selected as a Rhodes Scholar and certainly does need me to defend her.

Obamas American Way

Many people would say, when dealing with the issue's, that we have it better than other countries, well, America is not just another country, it is a guide for freedom, a promoter of peace and American's are the only people on earth that live under our Constitution, we do not live under, nor are we subject to any other countries law's, and therein lie's our problem, we send aid to unfortunate countries, whether to feed the people, or pay blackmail aid to prevent a conflict between separate cultures, as with Egypt and Israel. We have no control over that aid, how it is distributed or what the money buy's, yet we continuously keep the poverty, low and middle class Americans in check, by assuming that they are too lazy too find a job, too drunk too care and too intent on screwing government to really see their plight.

It has become a country of, guilty until proven innocent mentality, and this is NOT a crime issue, it is an issue that regards the American standard of living, it reflects the conscientious of America, in that we care nothing for the needy citizens, but we sure do look good sending aid to Indonesia. Those Americans in power fail to see the sense of restructuring the labor force, not in spending to retrain for new job's, but helping those that lost jobs for failed businesses, not due to neglect or wrong decisions, but because big business, big oil and corporate America are forcing the little guy, the middle class, to close up shop because they simply cannot afford to buy in volume as, say Wal mart, they cannot restructure prices to reflect the additional charges imposed by those in power, and they cannot find a voice in government to help them, the candidates are party, the party is the lobby and the lobby represent corporate America.

How, i ask, do you expect people to survive, to live the American dream and live the American standard of living? Under the current mentality of " vote party ", we can't.

I have been in many debates here on ireport, often futile, as more times than not, when i continue to make points on issue's that Obama is trying to implement solutions for, the people i talk to turn the debate into a ranting that addresses Palin and her children, or McCain and dementia, so i generally go somewhere else, as the Obama cult mentality has kicked in and in almost every instance the result is the same, ranting about non issue's, as they cannot win the argument that Obama will break the countries back, financially and in forcing our children into child labor, by means of community service.

When reviewing Obama's website, it seems that Obama wrote down what he wanted to do, without figuring out if we could afford it, or, he intends to sell America from treasury notes to foreign nations, because his solutions do not make sense. On the average, between Obama and McCain, i have had more constructive debates from the McCain camp, those who try to profess Obama and his policy's do not know what they are talking about, nor does it seem they even went to his website to do the math, they are smitten with a man from the sound of his voice, his picture of looking up, to show Obama cultist's that he looks to God, when it is but a show to attract the gullible and easily conned. Below are issue's from Obama's economy plan on his website, i also tried to find something about the disabled, but that issue was turned to helping the disabled of the world, not America and the page was very short.

I would like to address these issue's here through debate with those who think they know Obama and like his policy's. There are two type's of policy that Obama is trying to force on Americans. 1. Tax breaks; Tax breaks are a good idea, but they need to be limited or we will not have the ability to pay our debt, and it will grow, under Obama tax breaks add up to 40% of his plans, they are spread out so as to look just right to the unobsevant, those who go to websites and look for plans that affect their needs only, and are not interested in what is good for America or our childrens future, they are quick fixes that our children will pay for.

Then there is the grants, funds and stimulas plans, which account for about 55% of Obama's plans, which will drive the national debt through the heavens themselves, these look real good to an extent, but they are limited to families, there is no provision for divorced parents with custody, the primary parent is the only ones entitled, but we forget that the child lives with each parent for a certain length of time each year, and the primary spouce is a mean SOB indeed, with no compassion to send food etc. with the child, which will cause conflict with the child mentally, confuse morals, etc. These plans not only limit and restrict money, but they also are not enough, the economy boost will pay for a few tanks of gas, or a month or two of food, then Americans are right back where they started, or worse off, as prices rise with the knowledge that America has money to spend.

This is exactly what happened when we had the minimum wage increase in 2006, dairy products rose 40% in consumer cost, gas rose 20%, and there was NO reason, employee's in these companies were already working above the new wage scale, it was just a chance for corporate America to raise the prices, as they had an excuse, wasn't a valid excuse, but they took advantage of it just the same.

I placed the website link below, it takes you directly to the economic plan of Obama's site, do the math, discuss the real issue's between your friends and then debate me on them, do not take this out of context, debate on the words writtin alone, you will find that 70% of Obama's website, is a lie, it cannot be done without selling more treasury bonds to foreign nations, or that 70% will be ignored if Obama wins the White House.

Stop drinking Obama's water, open your eye's, see the truth and think of America.

Thanks for the clarification. It was the minimum wage increase that has caused $4/gallon gas; 20% rise in dairy products etc.

I forgot that "the fundimentals of our economy are sound"; our economy certainly does not need any new plans, idea's or discusion since everythign is so rosy. Whew!!

On the matter of disability. I found eight pages detailing the Obama plan. Another paper focused on autism. This is quite a bit more than is found on Sen. McCain's plan which can be found here: _____________________ oops, sorry there is not even one word about disability plans on his web site.
