Earth Day 2009 Revisited

My Flower Bed
Long overdue...I know. Earth Day should be everyday, actually.

I spent the day outside, riding my bike, planting a flower bed in my yard and planting three trees at my mom and dad's property. I picked up litter at the park and organized my front porch into my own recycling center.

My sister-in-law and my 3-year old nephew planted a garden at their new house. Every time I visit, he tells me he has "red tomatoes," takes my hand and walks me to the garden. He'll pick a few, and we'll chomp away.

Tuesday, September 22 was the Autumnal Equinox...my favorite. Supposedly you can stand an egg on it's end on the vernal and autumnal. So Jacob and I tried it. On the kitchen floor, we stood a standard, white, extra-large egg on it's end. Exciting! I'm sure different surfaces create different outcomes. But for a good couple minutes, our egg balanced. Hooray!

Easy sing-a-long. Teach children to respect the environment and their responsibility for the earth. Sing it to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb.

The plants and animals are needing us, needing us, needing us. Plants and animals are feeding us. What do we do for them?
So take care of the plants at home, plants at home, plants at home. You could even grow some vegetables--to feed your family.
Animals need their food and homes, food and homes, food and homes. So don't mess with their habitats; it is their only home.

Next time: Music, music! Promise.

Aww, you talked about us, yeah! Sammy sure loves his "mo-matoes" that he grew!

That's awesome about that egg thing!! My best friend did that too. What kind of bulbs should we be planting during this season to grow for the spring?

Perennials. It's best to plant the bulb after the first frost to keep the bulb cool until spring. I suggest tulips or crocuses. You can also grow indoors during the colder months. Try paperwhite narcissus. They don't require soil to grow!

I never understood why we would plant so late in the season, but come spring, I will be glad to see the early preparations pay off. :)
