Sun KingPosted Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at 11:02 AM
I grew up with the Beatles (not literally), but they are the basis for my love of music, lyrics, harmonies and the like, thanks to my dad. From time to time, I'll find myself listening to my Beatles mp3 discs for weeks at a time. Right now, for example, they are helping me welcome and embrace this beautiful weather and shiny days.
One song, off Abbey Road, is Sun King, written by John Lennon. It's a beautiful, airy and majestic song with long, drawn, harmonious lyrics. A particular stanza is in multiple foreign languages. Here is the song in it's entirety:
Here comes the sun king The last stanza includes Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. The Beatles, being the silly creatures they are, thought to create this work using a mix of language, similar to that of "playground taunting." The words, as a whole, don't mean anything. Believe me, I've ran the lyrics through a translator multiple times in each of the above mentioned languages. Each time, only a piece of the lyrics are deciphered. Another interesting piece of info, is the song title. It was originally meant to be Here Comes the Sun King. As to not confuse listeners, they shortened it to Sun King. (Here Comes the Sun, written by George Harrison is also on Abbey Road.) The song is very beautiful and enjoyable to sing. Maybe I would sound silly singing it if I came in the vicinity of a foreigner. But, it's the Beatles. How can you not? That is what is really cool about the Beatles Jessica. Were you to sing this song in the presence of a foreigner you will find that they can sing along with you. I truely believe that the Beatles did a lot to help unite the world. Their music was a gift to us all to be shared by all races, nationalities and generations. For them to have inspired someone such as yourself many years after they have ceased to exist as a group is testimony to that.
You are very right, broke. That is the beauty in the Beatles. Their music is timeless!
I love the Beatles!! On a sunny day there is nothing better than sun-shiny lyrics and beautiful harmony. Another one that comes to mind is Summertime-Janis Joplin (Always good on a hot day)=)
