Woodstock '69, anyone?Posted Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 12:12 PM
It was only a matter of time before I busted out with the Festival of all festivals. You knew it. So did I.
I've been jamming some very groovy, Doors-esque Portugal. the Man. The album is called Church Mouth released in 2007. It brings me to reminisce about the legendary, exclusive festival plagueing me. Woodstock '69. Only I can't reminisce, seein's how I wasn't born yet. But then again, if I was able to enjoy the fete, I probably wouldn't have the appreciation for music the way I do now..........nah, I definitely would. Joe Cocker, Jimi, Joan Baez, CCR, Santana, Grateful Dead, Janis, Jefferson Airplane and oh so many more. I hear Tommy James & the Shondells were to play. They turned down the invite, which is a HOORAY! for me. I'm sure that would grind away at me more so. Nothing like a little Crimson & Clover. Am I right? What I want to hear (please) is any stories, memories, firsthand or fifth-hand experiences, regarding this most ridiculous of rock fests. Gimme gimme! Hey Jess
I was working at a downtown KC theater in the early 70s and we ha da movie playing that needed a very untraditional sound system - I think it was either Earthquake or Midway - anyways - it was called Sensurround and the whole giant auditorium would shake when the earthquake happned or when the bombers took out a destroyer.
So there we were - all tech'd out for the movie -when someone gets his hands on a reel of Woodstock.
Late after work one night - 1/2 dozen or so of us went up to the mezz level and sat and watched the whole "WOODSTOCK" movie with the Sensurround CRANKED UP!
Dude!!!!!!! It was awesome man!
I can only imagine! Sound and imagery. Huge. Next best thing, right?!
Check out the Demo News archives about a week or two after Woodstock. There was a Marshall Music Festival featuring Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, among others, out at Osage Field (the baseball park out at Indian Foothills). Teddy didn't take the stage until around 1:00, and I didn't get home over on Viking Lane until about 3, but I thoroughly enjoyed his profanity-laced performance. Though he's right-wing now, I don't think his FOX supporters now would have approved of his persona then.
He appeared again out at Valley @1971. I remember "Papa's Will" on the playlist and my cheast aching from ther bass. Good Times!
Jess - the real problem with your question is that if you CAN remember Woodstock, you probably weren't there...
Nanadot, what about Country Joe & the Fish?
Here, here, NanaDot! Perhaps this is why I've not received very many posts. Shoot, if someone can say "I was there, but I don't remember," that would make my day!
i like to stay up late blogging too.
i fell that blogging is a good way to stay in touch with the world.
Well, Jess, can't say I was there, but I do remember it. And what I remember most is hearing news reports and seeing film of some pretty odd-looking people dancing in the rain and the mud who seemed to be having a really great time.
Of course, a good part of the "great time" was alcohol- and drug-fueled...and I suspect the hangover was nasty.
I was 23 in 1969 and far more concerned about keeping my job and paying my rent than dancing in the mud...and the music, well, just wasn't much to my taste. Loud and screechy, much too long and unintelligible, most of it.
NanaDot has the right take, though - anyone who WAS there probably doesn't remember it, at least not clearly.
I'm jelous I would have loved to have been there!!! Huge Hendrix fan....
