dredg - from left: Mark Engles, Gavin Hayes, Dino Campanella and Drew Roulette.
dredg was born in the early '90s in California. This Prog/Art rock group includes vocalist Gavin Hayes, guitarist Mark Engles, bassist Drew Roulette and drummer Dino Campanella. The music emanating from their instruments is transcendent. dredg brings harmonic, flowing melodies with meaningful vocals, soothing lyrics and gripping bass lines. dredg's unique musical style pushes their own genre. Their releases are considered concept albums, with the first full length in 1999 (2001), Leitmotif. This release is about a man traveling the world, changing and searching. Sample lyrics from Yatahaze Questioning, and saying / Our opinions, they're failing / They're constantly changing / Our ignorance, remaining / We're hoping, and waiting / We're living, but dying / While trying to find out / My meaning isn't planned out / Come to the conclusion / Might as well be an illusion / While trying to find out / I did nothing, but shut out dredg's second album, another concept, was released in 2002, El Cielo. This album is about sleep paralysis and includes letters from people suffering from this disease. dredg took samples from these letters and created a beautiful, harmonious piece. Sample lyrics from Of The Room A faceless crowd of elderly beings / Roses sprouting, yellow glow / With sound conscience into the night, beneath / Night falls beneath candle light / White squalls beneath winter skies The most recent album was released in 2005, Catch Without Arms. Once again, a concept album, mostly revolving around positives and negatives. Sample lyrics from Sang Real I'm the addict on the corner / I'm the lawyer in the tower / I'm the body with the coroner / No, the leader with all the power / You're the pillow, the cool side / The sand during high tide / The cocktail, poolside / The water when clouds collide dredg is currently in the studio recording their latest effort. dredg will be touring soon in support of the as-yet-untitled album. Gavin & Drew also create painting collections for each album. View some of their work here. Give dredg a listen; lend them your ears. This musical conquest produces marvelous sound for your senses! Dredg lives here. ~Enjoy! Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Ive been listening to KMMO THE STATION THAT CARES all day and no Dredge.........oh well maybe tomorrow
I'm sure you won't find these guys on any local stations. But the music is well worth a listen. I promise.
Just thought of something else. dredg takes some influence from Salvador Dali's painting "Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee around a Pomegranate One Second Before Awakening" for their sophomore release about sleep paralysis. I had never heard of this condition before hearing this album. Does anybody have any encounters or interesting stories?
this is easily the best thing i've ever read on a small town newspaper's website.
good work, jess.
oh yeah, i have experienced sleep paralysis, but it's much too detailed of a story to share here.
Dredge blows
I've been a fan of dredg for a while now, my brother nick got me into it.... just like most of the bands I love, he has such good taste.
Nice piece Jess!
Thanks for the comments, guys! Thanks for spending time with these musical geniuses, also.

Jess - here's some info on sleep paralysis from WebMd.com. Sure doesn't sound like fun!

Dredge is ok....I'm more into Shinedown or Godsmack.
Still nice to see some young blood at the MDN though.

dredg will be playing on 11/19 at The Fubar in St. Louis and 11/20 at The Sokol Underground in Omaha. Keeping my fingers crossed for a KC date somewhere in there.
You don't need a KC date. St. Louis is good enough, yeah? But, hey, double the win if there is a KC date!
they will be in KC in mid ocotber, i'm told.
good to hear. I miss the live show.
remember Omaha 02 capitalb620?
Count me in, capitalb620!
just updating...there won't be a KC date. I'm going to Oklahoma to see them next month, and then to Omaha (like i'd forget, waka)in November.
