So, I was spending some time with my 6-year-old nephew. He was delightfully telling me about bugs and how peculiar they are. He began to use an adjective and stopped himself. My mother (his grandmother) was sitting across from us and asked what it was he was going to say.
"What? Nocturnal? Is that what you were going to say." "Yeah," he replied. "What does nocturnal mean?" asked my mom. "Rock and Roll?" he innocently asked. I wanted to jump up and tell him "Yes!" that everything in this world relates back to rock and roll and the beats and rhythms we heed. I loved it. I gave him a hug then began to explain what nocturnal means. My nephew threw some perspective at me. Rock and Roll words. Maybe it's in their meanings or maybe in the way they roll off the tongue. But, I've considered other Rock and Roll words. Here is a short list of my Rock and Roll words, and I hope you add to it. ~Enjoy!

Bump bang bop boom beer bam bing beer and beeblebrox
(That's just skimming the top layer of a rather dusty memory. I went to see They Might Be Giants with my teenage daughter over at the Blue Note recently. That was the first rock concert I've seen since, um, since, sincesincesince, er, it's-hell-getting-old, uh ... I can't remember.)
OK, Eric, anyone who throws a "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" reference into this discussion is decidedly un-Rock 'n Roll. Maybe Progressive Rock, like Yes or Emerson, Lake, and Palmer at best. Do people younger than 30 even know who those bands are? And I suppose the fact that I knew you referenced "Hitchhikers Guide" and am well acquainted with the music of both Yes and ELP means I'm more geek than Rock at this point, doesn't it?
It does, NanaDot. Ya young whippersnapper, you. Why back in MY day, bands were bands, not "projects." Hrumph. Where's my rheumatiz ointment? I know I left it over by my Grateful Dead LPs. Or somewhere.

I think of Zaphod as the first rock and roll president of the galaxy. Guess that's why he came to mind.

I'll tell you another Rock and Roll word - Rush! Who also happens to blow me away with their progressive rock, instrumental genius! Working Man - seven minutes of pure bliss!

I loved Working Man, too, but my favorite Rush for some reason is "2112," which I couldn't stop listening to for about a year.
Is Rush still around?

Me, I'm kind of a classic rocker myself, as my screenname implies, being the first line of the chorus of the Moody Blues hit "Wildest Dreams."
But you know which "project" (LOL) is my favorite?

The Edge is THE best guitar soloist I have ever laid ears upon.
And the great thing about them is their music has stayed awesome throughout the years. Ups and downs, of course, but Bono and the team have kept on rockin' and rollin' to this day.
I think they're sort of a tribute to the perseverance of music that can shake a nation (if you want to be that narrow).
all is good , but rush oh ya , and how can you forget tom sawyer ,the most awesome rush song ever, like ac/dc says rock & roll will never die !!!! :]
How could you guys leave out King Crimson when you think of progressive rock? At long last I can say with not much doubt that rock and roll is here to stay. I have listened to it since it began to take baby steps. At that time it was pretty basic stuff. Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis, and a whole lot of bland stuff not worth mentioning. It got interesting with the British invasion. The incomparable Beatles advanced rock a long way. I thought then and still do that ironically they, Cream, and the Stones respected the blues roots of rock a lot more than many of the American Rockers of the day. I still listen to the Beatles White Album and The Best of Cream. I stayed with Rock through the sixties movement, enjoyed Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, The Doors, Janis Joplin, et al. I hung in with Southern Rock (Allman Brothers). I even had Super Tramp and Dire Straits as rock moved toward the eighties. Then the disco monster swallowed everything up and I ran for cover to jazz. I confess I have become ignorant of good rock music since, though I do listen to U2, they were too great to ignore when they hit the scene. I'm sorry to have bored you with this self centered litany but there is method to my madness. I ask that considering the rock I listened to before I jumped over the cliff, what current rock do you think I would like? Maybe I'll get by with a little help from my friends.
Good grief, JJ. The kid is 6. He hasn't had time to be properly indoctrinated on the narrowly defined socially approved definitions and arrangements of words. Someday the natural poetry will be squeezed out of him, but not yet.

I do love doo-wop music :) Which makes me, uh, older. Than dirt.
older than dirt, probably. but one thing i know for sure is that this blog entry is worse than dirt.
I take my time to read a lot of things. Some are good; some are bad. This latest "Nocturnal" effort is rather poor. Hopefully this blogger will get a hit with her next pitch. Otherwise it'll be her third strike, and if that is the case, don't expect to see much more from this blog for quite some time.
I believe my entries are rather great. I'm hitting a certain demographic. Obviously some people don't fall into that category - Appreciation for Music.

you can appreciate music without trying to make rocket science out of it. When you do that it just makes no sense and becomes a bore.

omg! I love Tom Sawyer!!! One of favorite songs ever!!! I love music, but I really like the 60's & 70's, but I love new rock like KORN, Metalica, and heavier stuff, This blog is awesome! I want a guitar so bad and I want to learn how to play even worse! I have rock band at home and my husband & I get crazy, He is the drummer which he actually is in real life and get busy on the guitar, but I have never played one. I just know that to anybody that plays one has got talent and skill, if you listen to a solo, like Led Zeplin has, and then imagine how hard it is to play rock band on expert, I know that I will never be that good!!!! It sure is nice to dream and have fun though!!!!!!!LOL!!

I love 70"s Classic Rock...Acid Rock, Heavy Rock what ever you want to call it...I love it. Being in my 30's now I was a little to young to get to go to the really good ones....my mom on the other hand was a concert junky..I can sit and listen for hours about all the concerts she's been to.
But most of those concerts arn't for public knowledge...lol
I've seen Kid Rock, Def Leppard, Black Oak,Leon Russell, Skynyrd, Warrant, ZZ, I seen the stones, and Plant/Page concert...
But my dream concerts would of been ELO, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple but for the Riffs...you know the ones I'm talkin about...lol
My feel good music is still Skynyrd.....throw in some Kiss, Clapton and Stevie Ray.....
