dredg in KC part 2
Posted Friday, January 7, at 3:34 PM
Sunday, November 14 of last year, dredg graced the stage at the Beaumont Club in Kansas City, Missouri. Opening was an otherworldly, progressive, instrumental band called Animals As Leaders. Next up was a band I had the privilege to witness years ago at the Bottleneck in Lawrence. Codeseven split in 2005 but announced a reunion tour in 2010. When I heard they were playing with dredg, I had to see them again. Of course, they didn't disappoint...

Hi everyone. I haven't posted in too long. Just wanted everyone to know dredg will be playing in Kansas City, MO, at the Beaumont Club on Sunday, November 14. If you are unaware of dredg, please reference an early post on my blog. They are wonderful live, and I hope you take the opportunity!...

The Mic Stand Incident
Posted Tuesday, July 13, at 4:17 PM

If you reference one of my previous blog posts (Woodstock '69, anyone), I was jamming some very groovy, very eclectic Portugal. the Man. I got a chance to see them live at Mojo's in Columbia on March 24. I shouldn't even try a review of this wonderful band; this work of art. Due to my limited vocabulary, I couldn't even paint a deserving picture of the music and unique oddness radiating forth...

Copeland - Farewell
Posted Tuesday, June 15, at 3:38 PM

March 18, my friend, Julia, and I went to see Copeland at the Granada in Lawrence, KS. It was their last tour; their last shows. It was the first time we saw them, and we were overjoyed. A little bittersweet. Copeland is an indie rock band, very passionate with emotional, heart-tugging lyrics. ...

40 years
Posted Monday, April 19, at 8:58 AM

Today is my birthday. But more importantly, Thursday, April 22 is Earth Day. Not only is it a day to appreciate and behold this beautiful earth, it is Earth Day's 40th birthday. This year, let us all make a non-traditional "New Year's resolution" by contributing to the campaign for a greener earth. Begin to recycle (if you don't.) If you do, elaborate by replacing disposable goods for sustainable ones...

HUM
Posted Monday, January 11, at 12:29 PM

A very underrated band, in my opinion. HUM exists in it's own realm, not really in a genre. Hailing from Champaign, Illinois, HUM released only a handful of albums and EPs and ceased as a recording/touring band since around 2000 but have recently reconciled for various reunion shows...

Jonah Matranga - Livin Small
Posted Friday, December 11, at 8:50 AM

This entry should be long and ridiculous. (I hope.) There's so much to write about this man. Jonah Matranga creates beautiful, heartfelt, enormous lyrics and guitar hooks. The music is full of passion and power; simple, yet perfect. He embeds his heart and life into the sounds he emanates. His interaction with everyone around him (before, during, after shows) is alluring...

Earth Day 2009 Revisited
Posted Thursday, October 1, at 11:37 AM

Long overdue...I know. Earth Day should be everyday, actually. I spent the day outside, riding my bike, planting a flower bed in my yard and planting three trees at my mom and dad's property. I picked up litter at the park and organized my front porch into my own recycling center...

Earth Day 2009
Posted Wednesday, April 15, at 4:59 PM

"Give me love, give me peace on earth, give me light, give me life." -George Harrison. George Harrison wrote those words in the song Give Me Love in 1973 for his solo album Living in the Material World. With that in mind, Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day and Friday, April 24 is Arbor Day. Revel in the beauty of our world by getting outside (weather permitting) and spend some time with our Mother Nature. Below is an Earth Day list of ideas...

Sun King

I grew up with the Beatles (not literally), but they are the basis for my love of music, lyrics, harmonies and the like, thanks to my dad. From time to time, I'll find myself listening to my Beatles mp3 discs for weeks at a time. Right now, for example, they are helping me welcome and embrace this beautiful weather and shiny days...

Happy Christmas
Posted Friday, November 28, at 9:59 AM

It's almost Christmastime. Everyone's in the spirit and feeling the magic. The city is decorating, and it's getting colder. It's all set. Remember our loved ones, family, friends. Remember our lost ones and remember our troops. John Lennon had a great work in Happy Christmas (War Is Over). It was an inspirational song about the Vietnam War. Lennon, with Yoko Ono, protested this war and brought about the message of peace to the country and the world. War is over...if you want it...

Woodstock '69, anyone?
Posted Thursday, September 25, at 12:12 PM

It was only a matter of time before I busted out with the Festival of all festivals. You knew it. So did I. I've been jamming some very groovy, Doors-esque Portugal. the Man. The album is called Church Mouth released in 2007. It brings me to reminisce about the legendary, exclusive festival plagueing me. ...

Clutch
Posted Thursday, August 14, at 11:41 AM

Do you dig guitar jams and swinging beats? I do. Clutch permeates soulful, rock and funk, all the while telling a story, introducing heroes and giving the listener a jam session. I got to see Clutch in Columbia with Glassjaw and others. Then I had the awesome opportunity to spend a hot, sweaty night in Springfield and be witness to a two hour Clutch/The Bakerton Group set! It was madness!...

dredg
Posted Thursday, July 17, at 3:22 PM

dredg has been a part of my life for a while. I was able to see and meet dredg for the first time in 2003 as a part of the Sno Core Tour. They have ventured to the Midwest a few more times over the years and I always try to catch a show. It's magnificent - full of energy, enigmatic sounds and peculiar instruments...

Nocturnal
Posted Thursday, June 26, at 4:04 PM

So, I was spending some time with my 6-year-old nephew. He was delightfully telling me about bugs and how peculiar they are. He began to use an adjective and stopped himself. My mother (his grandmother) was sitting across from us and asked what it was he was going to say...

Rock Music & Me
Posted Wednesday, May 28, at 4:31 PM

My father instilled music in me very young. I watched as that brilliant man taught himself the guitar; I listened to his song, and it [music] became my passion. My father explained the music, the tone, the rhythm, the meaning. He explained lyrics and how it meets different peoples needs; how someone can interpret a song differently. Talent lives in those fingers. I only hoped one day, his genius would carry over to me...
