TEXT MESSAGES-I NEED HELP!
Posted Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at 10:04 AM<< Previous | Read comments | Respond | Email link | Next >>
As a person who has never sent a text message in my life, I'm left with questions whenever I read a post on blogs. What the #!X&* do these coded or abbreviated text words mean. Currently I don't have a dictionary to define them. Is there a text message book for dummies?

One form of Internet or text message communication is known as "leet" (or L33T, or other variants like that).
This Wikipedia link might help with that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet
But sometimes it's a matter of sounding out letters and numbers, or certain letters or numbers in words.
Such as: "gr8" equals "great."
Sometimes it's really complicated, other times word are just abbreviated: "LOL" is "Laugh Out Loud," "OMG!" is "Oh My God!"
I'm sure there is a basic dictionary of it out there on the World Wide Web, but I doubt you could find it just by "Googling" it, LOL!
I stand corrected: I Googled "internet speak translator" and came up with a good one: noslang.com.
Apparently, you can type in whatever it was you were texted and have it translated into plain English! Acronyms, L33T speak ... whatever.
This should help with the confusing "tX"s you've been getting.
wtf
"Special language" like slang, jargon, argot and all the other variations of non-standard usage, is whatever someone says it is, or whatever becomes standard (or popular) within that particular lanugage variation. My casual observation is that the more "outsiders" are irritated by it, the more the "insiders" are apt to use it. Kids love it because it's easy, in the first place, and drives their parents nuts, in the second place. Or maybe I have that reversed. My daughter thinks I'm hilarious because I go to a lot of effort to spell everything out. I prefer not to abbreviate because I want there to be no doubt in the mind of the receiver what I wanted to say. I checked out noslang.com and it's very good, in my estimation, although I did see at least a few things that I don't think are "standard" within the context of text-speak. And, of course, because it's an invented "language," it will all change in the blink of an eye. :)
wtf is right, have you guys seen this one?

JQ, here's another good place for translation: www.netlingo.com
I think that ITMGCBIGMAMMATISHMFCIAHSWC means "I Took My Gramma's Car Because I Mad At My Mom And Then I Saw Him My Friend Come In And He Smokes With Cigarattes" or something like that.
