Flight opens at Marshall Cinema

Denzel Washington stars in the harrowing "Flight", opening today at Marshall Cinema.

The movie "Flight" opens today at Marshall Cinema. I couldn't be more pleased to see movies of this caliber to be playing at our little movie house. "Flight" is one of the best movies of the year. It contains a performance by Denzel Washington that is sure to bring the popular actor awards nominations. Washington plays a commercial airline pilot who pulls off a miracle crash landing, saving the majority of the passengers on a flight. Unfortunately, the attention of his heroics brings into focus a substance abuse problem that threatens to bring him crashing down himself.

The movie contains the most intense crash sequence I've ever seen on screen. Its intensity is matched by Washington's harrowing portrayal of a man out of control due to his addictions. It is a unique look at a subject that has consistently produced wonderful portrayals from the actors brave enough to tackle such a flawed character as a drug abuser. The grand scale brings a new element into the intimate subject matter. This film is not to be missed.

Also, don't miss Marshall Cinema's special free screening of Dr. Suess' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" starring Jim Carrey Friday, Dec. 7 after the Christmas Parade at 7:15 p.m.

Good point, Cheetah. This movie is what is called a hard 'R'. That rating is earned and it's earned in the very first scene. I think most people see Denzel as a likable actor. His likability comes into play in how he deals with his addictions, but he does not play a likable person in this movie. You shouldn't go into this movie thinking that this is another one of Denzel's truth-sayers, who tells the facts as they are and even if he comes off a little harsh sometimes, it's all because he cares. His truth in this film is very harsh indeed, maybe too harsh for some. But therein lies its power.

Oh, and due to the fact that the cinema had to turn away people from it's free screening at "The Grinch" on Friday evening due to a capacity crowd, they will be holding another free screening of the holiday movie Saturday Dec. 8 at 1 p.m.
