Two Opposites Open at the Marshall Cinema TodayPosted Friday, January 6, 2012, at 9:44 AM
Two movies are opening at the Marshall Cinema today, and they couldn't be more different from each other. They're both very good, however.
First, Cameron Crowe, the writer/director of "Jerry Maguire", returns to the silver screen with his first movie in six years. "We Bought a Zoo" is a surprising true story about a widower who drops everything and moves to a new home with his two children. There's just one thing a little strange about their new home. It's a zoo.
This movie is a welcome return to form for Crowe, feeling the most like "Jerry Maguire" since he hit paydirt with a line like "You had me at 'Hello.'" It's a feel good, mostly family friendly PG movie (there is a moment where a 7-year-old refers to a portion of the male anatomy in an inappropriate but humorous way). You will leave the theater smiling and contemplating the notion of giving it all up to buy a zoo.
Second, Marshall Cinema presents the American adaptation of the wildly popular thriller novel "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Directed by David Fincher ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), "Dragon Tattoo" is a dark and cold movie that digs into a long unsolved family mystery. The man hired to investigate the mystery is coming off a personal and professional public humiliation. The girl who helps him comes from an even darker situation.
This movie is a masterpiece of mood and setting. Although it has a two hour and forty minute running time, it's paced quickly enough to feel like a much shorter movie. It does contain some very harsh R-rated material, including a disturbing rape scene. It has wonderful performances by its stars--Daniel Craig (of James Bond fame) and Rooney Mara as the titular Girl with the tattoo. With a strong supporting cast, this film is slowly building its popularity to become one of the underdogs of this year's Oscar race. If you're a fan of the books, it doesn't disappoint.
